FREE Gateway PC in *terrible* condition. [CLAIMED]

Post by Sparrowhawk »

A friend has asked me to try to salvage data from a very old PC (Gateway Athlon, manufactured in 2000). It’s been stored in a leaky garage for at least 15 years, so the condition, as you’d expect, is pretty dire, see pics. HDD not included. I’ve ordered an IDE to USB caddy to try to get data off it, although I suspect it’s dead.

Anyway, rather than send it to landfill, if anyone wants it and can collect from the Bath/Chippenham area, it’s yours.
Maybe somebody can resurrect this old beast. I’ll keep this offer open for a few days, if no interest, I’ll take it to recycling at the end of next week.

The side panel is available.

Pickup only, I can’t mail this, it weighs a ton!

Remarkably, somebody wanted it (not from this forum, you lot have more sense :D). It's gone now.

In the meantime, I've managed to extract the data from one of the hard drives but the second is proving more tricksy.

If I had lived near you, I would chuck all thd PC rubbish away and put a QL board inside with Qubide and Trump card. Used to do this in 1990s...

Yeah, I did wonder if anyone would want it for that. Also PCs of that era are very popular with the retro gaming crowd and fetch silly prices on eBay (when in good condition). I thought maybe somebody would want it who could do the required clean up/repairs and get Win9x on it for gaming - which indeed is what is going to happen to it now.

Also I managed to get the data off the second hard drive - so a very satisfactory outcome all around.

I've offloaded some old PC hardware recently while having a clearout - exactly the same, most of my stuff went to people wanting older retro systems to run old software on.
