Complete OPD ROMs, in case anyway fancies making an Emulator!

The Thor, Aurora, Q40, Q60 & Q68 etc. are discussed here.

Complete OPD ROMs, in case anyway fancies making an Emulator!

Post by Chr$ »

I don't think the ICL OPD (AKA Merlin Tonto etc) ROMs are anywhere to be found online, probably because they are fairly uncommon beasties and who knows, ICL may not have explicitly made them PD. I doubt very much that ICL or its successors will be too bothered about the short-lived One Per Desk system and I can't imagine it would have any potential modern commercial use, so I'm sharing the main OPD ROMs (x4) and the Psion XChange ROMs (x5) that also usually accompanied the OPD.

Useful one day in case anyone encounters a corrupt ROM. Perhaps someone could make an emulator out of them! I need to work out how to extract the speech synthesis vocabulary (looks like that might be possible with a BBC, as a speech upgrade for those used the same pair of TI chips).

Ask me about felt pads - I can cut them to size and they have proven excellent for mdv data recovery.

This is a dump of the ICL OPD vocabulary phrase ROM (PHROM) TMS6100NL. The data in this chip gets passed to and processed by the TMS5220 speech synthesiser chip to ultimately emanate as words through the loudspeaker.

I enjoyed getting the data off this chip... I saw that the BBC Model B used the same pair of chips and that there exists a program to read the data from the PHROM (any TMS6100 that you pop into the socket). I happen to have a BBC Model B, so some playing around later and here we are.

IC4 image in the first post is blank, unfortunately. I've attached the ROMs from my OPD. I wonder if any variations exist, do you know the ICL ROM codes for your chips? They should start with an X or a Q, see below for mine from a BT Merlin Tonto:

CPU daughterboard:
IC4: XBAA02
IC5: XBAB03
IC6: QCAQ05
IC7: XBAD02

M1813 4 slot ROM pack with Xchange 2.5:
IC5: XFAA01 (not fully dumped yet)
IC6: XBAJ02

Do note that IC5/XFAA01 is incomplete/not a good dump- I need to obtain the right adapter to dump the full 1mbit chip...

Oh, let me check and address that. I'll also add my ICL chip part numbers.

I've changed the file in the original post to include the proper IC4 image.

Chip Part numbers:
(CPU daughterboard)
IC4 XBAA03
IC5 XBAB04
IC6 XBAC03
IC7 XBAD03

(Xchange ROM pack)
IC6 QCAT04 (EPROM version)
IC7 XBAF01
IC8 XBAG01
IC9 XBAH01
IC10 XBAJ01

Hi all,

Finally got around to saving ROMs from the parts I have.
I'm in Australia, so these are all "Computerphone" ROMs, not sure if there's any actual differences though.

So far I've saved these:
2 complete CPU board ROM sets
5 Rompack ROM sets
a messaging capsule ROM image
6 datalink capsule ROMs, there are two sets of three that are different to each other, not quite sure what the exact difference between them is.

I'd be interested in images from any other capsules people have.

Finally opened up one of the telephony modules I have and found out that it has an eprom 8751 and was able to dump it.

Which telephony module is that?

Ah - you mean the modem / telephone part on the left hand side (when viewed from the front) ?

Ah, yeah, that's what the manuals called it here.
The other two I have have a Philips 8051, so I got lucky there.

So yours had an Eprom version in it - lucky as you say. The 8051 normally has a 4K ROM - but the image is only just over 1K - which seems a bit light for all of the things this thing is supposed to do (scan keyboard, drive the modem, handle 2 phone lines and handle the DTMF data).
