QPC2 : WIN1_ cloning

Hi,

I want to put my old XP PC into mothballs, and copy the entire lot of QPC2 WIN1_ programs onto a an external backup hard drive, (DOS5_).

I can find no advice in the QPC Manual. Can this be done without having to COPY each program seperately ?

Hope someone has the answer...

Assuming we're talking about a QPC2 installation, using QXL.WIN file system, then from Windows or Dos you could simply copy the qxl.win onto an external hard drive. A QXL.win is simply one massive file as far as the host OS is concerned.

Is it located in a sub-file ?

By default mine is in C:\ProgramData\QPC. That directory is hidden normally (at least it is for me on win10). Could it be that the search thing is set to not search within hidden/system files?

It might not be called "QXL.win". It will have the ".win" extension but might have a different prefix, like QLWA or QXL1 etc.
The quickest way to finding where it is is to launch QPC2 and go to the configuration screen, click on the devices button and go to the Win/FLP/Dos configuration screen, and the location and name of the "QXL.win" will be shown. If the configuration screen is not shown automatically, when QPC2 is launched hold shift when QPC2 is launched to get to the configuration screen.

When you start QPC do you get the config dialogue? If so, click the WIN button and the location of all your hard disc QXL format files will be listed.

On my old Compaq XP PC : The QPC2 win1_ file is stored as QPCdemo.win : I copied it to my backup hard disk on a file called compaqHD.

On my newer Asus W8 PC : The QPC2 win1_file is stored as QPCDEMO.win : I assigned dos6_ to compaqHD, but QPCdemo.win is NOT a directory file.

So when I do dir dos6_, I just get the sector-counts of compaqHD. If I View the latter, I get gobbledygook printed out.

I now doubt if all the programs on compaqHD are in any way accessible, except to the old Compaq PC !

It looks like I will have to copy all the compaq win files to the backup hard drive one by one after all...

The qxl.win file (or any .win file) is the QDOS file system stored in a single large file on the DOS or NTFS file system. It is a virtual hard drive. IIRC, with QPC, any device with DOS in the name is assumed to be DOS FAT or NTFS file system. If you assign DOS5_ to a .win file, that will not work as QPC is expecting a different file system. You should assign the .win file to a WIN device type (like WIN1_ or WIN2_).

Hi Tim,

Yes, I have renamed my old PC 'WIN1_ file' as 'H:\qpcdemo.win3' and allocated that to WIN3_ on my new PC QPC2 startup window.

And BINGO! I now have all my old PC WIN_ files accessible on my new PC ..... whenever the backup drive is linked via a USB slot.

Many thanks to all for your advice. I can now place my old PC in mothballs, (and avoid having to regularly swap files via USB keys).
