QIMSI and RGB->VGA converter housing.

Hello

I renewed my QL about a year and half ago (I introduced myself to this forum back then) and I bought a QIMSI interface (mainly as mass storage solution) and a RP2040-Zero based RGB to VGA converter (after all these years I wanted to see my QL in colour). Of course, both units came without housing. I’m not an electronic guy but rather a mechanical engineer, specialised for plastic part design, and I’m convinced that the housing is integral and important part of any device I decided to model my own housings for QIMSI and RGB->VGA converter. I tried to make them “as QL-ish” as possible ;) … I know there are more similar things out there, but I love to do my own thing sometimes :P .

For QIMSI I made a two-part housing, which are mounted together with screws. Screws should be self-tapping screws with 3mm outer thread diameter and with maximal shaft length of 16mm. If the 3D printing process is accurate enough, metric screws can do also, but self-tapping is better choice. Here are some CAD screen grabs.

The RGB->VGA converter housing is also two-part unit, assembled with 4 screws with 3mm outer thread diameter. Situation about screws here is the same as at QIOMSI housing. I had to put some 8mm thick foam pads on top of VGA sub-D and on 5V power supply connector to secure firm fit of the unit in the housing. Here are some screen grabs of CAD model.

On 3D printed parts I only removed some burrs. I didn’t do any surface finish, I’m too clumsy for that, I only sprayed them in black. PLA material was used for 3D prints.

If somebody could use it, here are STL files for 3D printing and STEP files if somebody want to change something in CAD.

Have fun

Thanks for sharing! Nice to see that QIMSI is still also appreciated in its classic role as QL peripheral.
There are now so many case designs that I lost the overview. :D

Out of interest, do we have a rough figure of how many QIMSIs and QIMSI-Golds have been made?
