MDV Reverse Recovery

Post by t0nyt »

I’ve been using the excellent mdump_task to recover carts to MDV images since I got back into the QL

I quickly realised though that copying repaired files back to the original MDV (rather than reformatting first) was a disastrous idea

But i’m wondering if there is a program available that can take the image created by Mdump and write it back sector perfect to a cart please?

Alternatively is the answer simply to mount the image in vdrive and use something like copycat to copy it to the cart? Would that result in a near sector perfect restoration maybe?

Many thanks

Tried CopyCat v1 and that doesn't work with vDrive ("Cannot read source medium header")

Tried Cartridge Doctor, in automatic mode, and it copied the vDrive image back to cart but it wasn't sector perfect (as the programs protection check failed)

Will try Qlone tomorrow

You need mcopy_exe (I think it has an _exe extension). It's a little utility for doing exactly what you want, by Daniele, the same author as for the mdump_task program. From memory he is 'M68000' here on the forum.

Ask me about felt pads - I can cut them to size and they have proven excellent for mdv data recovery.

When I exec_w (or ew) flp1_mcopy it just comes back instantly with "Bad Parameter"

Any idea what I'm doing wrong please?

Many thanks

Am wondering if this is some kind of file header problem as it starts to run in C1 Monitor

I thought I'd try to unzip the file within Q-emuLator (rather than attaching the ZIP as a drive) but for the life of me I can't get an UNZIP utility to run within Q-emuLator (or on a QL)

I think there is a special one for Qemulator - Dilywin mentions it on his site, in the bit about archiving.

Thanks Pr0f. Just as you were posting I managed to get Unzip541 working, but after I extracted the mcopy.zip with it I still got "Bad Parameter" trying to exec the mcopy application

Will give Qlone+ a go later instead as I have that already setup ready to go

Many thanks
