C64 PSU

Hi,
Seeking advice re original PSU.
l do not quite understand, why the old regulator could let through AC peak potentially causing a damage inside C64, as they say on the net.
I therefore thought of replacing 5V voltage regulator. As it is potted inside with epoxy, I would disconnect old one from PCB first, and mount a suitable replacement with a screw to the alu heatsink from the open side, and reconnect to the PCB with three wires.
What would be recommended voltage regulator, linear or any other type, how many amps?
While at it, perhaps replacing also diodes, again any recommended types?
Many thanks.
Tomas
