Thank you for the clear and detailed explanation, Per. Another mystery solved.

And, reading the chapter "26.42 SELect ON" of the "SBASIC/SuperBASIC Reference Manual" is also handy.

Long story short: A hotfix for QL/E v3.23 is out now. Case closed.
