Rudolph Is Ill

Post by dilwyn »

Merry QLing Christmas everyone!

Having been under the weather with flu for most of December, I've written a little Christmas adventure game on the subject for you to play after Christmas dinner. It's a text adventure called Rudolph Is Ill, written in SuperBASIC. Just LRUN rudolph_bas. Instructions are in the plain text file called RUDOLPH_txt.

It is Christmas Eve at Santa's place. It is snowing heavily - there is a
blizzard.

Rudolph the red nosed reindeer is not well. He has a heavy cold and his nose is
more blue from the cold than red. In fact, he is so unwell that he will be
unable to haul the sled to deliver the Christmas gifts to all of the children.

Rudolph is locked in the reindeer shed and needs a magic golden carrot to help
make him better in time to haul the sled. You must find the Golden Carrot and
take it to him in order to make him feel better.

Beware of polar bears and arctic wolves. Finding the repellant spray might help.

Other time consuming obstacles might get in your way. You must find the objects
needed to deal with them. The key to the reindeer shed is missing. You must find
the right person to ask for its whereabout before you can deliver the Golden
Carrot to Rudolph.

Move around the area by using the GO command and direction, e.g. GO SOUTH.

Not sure what words to use? Try the word VOCABULARY.

Can't work out where you are? Try the MAP command.

Need to check what you are carrying (and you can only carry up to three items) -
use the word INVENTORY.

Good luck. The world's children are depending on you!

Thank you. The flu itself is more or less gone now (the shivers, aches, pains, runny nose) - I'd been vaccinated a few weeks ago, but it must be a different strain since the vaccines are produced a long time ahead on a "best guess which strain it will be this year" basis. Just this awful disabling cough left, I know several who've had the same thing recently (guess it's been the social season so germs get around) and it's taken many weeks for them to get rid of the cough, so I have that to look forward to for January I suppose.

The only positive to it was the game which came as a direct result! I felt so ill at one stage (and it's true what they say, you think you've got flu, you've got a cold; you think you're dying, you've probably got flu) that I prayed for a magic golden carrot to make me better by Christmas. Hence the game.

It was a testimony both to SuperBASIC and the Tim Hartnell/David Denham adventure creator https://dilwyn.theqlforum.com/games/adve ... hellQL.zip that it got written in just 48 hours. Probably the shortest time I've ever written a program of any great length.

Power to the QL!
